A Rental Place of One's Own.

A Rental Place of One's OwnOver the years, designer Raffi Jacobson (owner of Raffi Glass and one of my best friends), has spent thousands of dollars and countless hours remodeling and renovating his loft in Larchmont Village (Los Angeles). The results are nothing short of stunning. (See photos.)
Many of his friends (myself included) thought he was a little out of his mind because, you see, Raffi doesn't own his loft. He rents it. His lease ran out years ago ago and he's been living there on a month-to-month basis ever since. But the possibility that he could be forced out of his home within a 30-day notice period does not deter him from constantly changing things around. New walls, fixtures, and colors seem to miraculously appear every time I visit.
Well, apparently Raffi is not alone in his quest to make his rental a true home. Today's New York Times features an article about tenants who don't mind sinking their money into a property they don't even own. The article mentions a couple that claims spending $100,000 on renovations was the most economically prudent option for them (they were initially looking at apartments that rented for $20,000 a month).
But many renters believe that the price is well worth making their rental feel like a home. As one of the interviewees put it: "There's no point in having a place that feels like a hospital room."

New Design From an Ancient Land.

New Design From an Ancient LandHaving spent some of my formative years living in Israel, I've always thought of the country's sense of design as utilitarian. Most buildings were boxy and looked exactly the same, and the apartment units inside them usually didn't fare much better. But things have definitely changed for the better in the past few years. As the country's economy has improved, a new breed of a wealthy upper class has led to a number of ultra-luxury buildings popping up all over the place. They include a Tel Aviv apartment tower by Phillippe Starck and other buildings for the country's rich and famous.
Now a young Israeli designer named Dror Benshetrit is making waves outside his homeland with his simple yet ingenious take on home furnishings, fashion, and architecture.
Take, for example, his Pick Chair (pictured), which doubles as wall art, or his Skins footwear. My favorite, however, is his Rosenthal Vase of Phases collection (also pictured). Simply brilliant!

Soaking It Up…

Soaking It Up… It’s 39 degrees outside. The walk from your car to your house is enough to chill you to the bone… You scramble with your keys to get the door open while trying to get your hand to stop shaking from the cold… You grab a mug of hot cider and you’re trying to think of something to really warm you up… How about a nice hot bubble bath?
What better way to soak in some warmth and relax from all the holiday stress than taking a nice bath? Check out Bath and Body Works for their large selection of bubble baths and soaks. Next you might wanna put on some relaxing music or get yourself a good book to read. Grab your mug or for those a bit more melodramatic, grab a glass of wine… Set up some candles to enhance the mood, and you’re good to go.
For those of you who are not comfortable with your bathtub, let me tell you: there is hope for you yet! I too, suffered from CBS, also known as Cramped Bathtub Syndrome. The first step is to admit that you have a problem. Yes, your bathtub is small and uncomfortable and you hate cramming yourself into it. The next step is coming to the realization that you deserve better. What’s the point of having a tub if you never use it to take a bath in? It’s time to make a worthwhile investment that is sure to last you for years…
Here are a couple of tubs I love and I think you’ll really enjoy. I threw in the last one just cuz I thought you’d get a kick out of it… First we have the Cheviot Regal Cast Iron Double Ended Tub With Cast Iron Pedestal Base. This gorgeous tub is 68? x 31? Wide and 24? tall which is sure to give you lots of room, so no cramming necessary. Next we have the Kohler Revival 6' Bath Whirlpool. This little baby is big enough for two people, and has adjustable hydro massage. I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination… Last but not least is the Aston Martin of all bathtubs, the Kallista Archeo Copper Bathtub, Bath Set, and Handshower. Might not be in your price range, but would definitely add some shine to any bathroom…

Got Game?

Yes, this post is going to be about game rooms. WAIT!!!!! I know if you’re a woman you’re already moving your mouse up to that little “x” up on top, but just give me a second ok? I want to discuss some ideas on how to make your game room a more enjoyable place for the ENTIRE family to spend time, not just the guys… And for those of you who don’t know how to read between my lines yet, when I say “enjoyable to spend time” I mean pretty enough for the woman yet macho enough for the men. Can’t be done? Wanna bet it can? Read what I have to say and if at the end of this article you still think I’m nuts, I’ll…… I’ll….. oh I dunno I’ll do something for you ok?
Lets start with the basics… You’re obviously not going to be playing pool or shooting darts in the dark (ok, wait, actually if you’re a guy, this might sound like an interesting idea to you - please just DON’T). So lets talk about lighting fixtures for a minute… You’re gonna love this company called Z-Lite. They make really nice billiard lights in all different colors, shapes, sizes, and designs. I also really like this particular billiard lighting fixture by Nulco… as well as this one by Kenroy (although I think the Kenroy one would look really cool over a bar - one you might have in your game room).
